There are two impressive castles near Pylos: Palaiokastro, which was built in the 13th century by the Franks, and Niokastro, which was built in the 16th century by the Ottomans. The first is located between Voidokilia Beach and Golden Beach in a location with a magnificent view of Navarino Bay;
“Niokastro” is located on a hill just 100 m from the center of Pylos and is one of the best-preserved castles in Greece, housing the Archaeological Museum of Pylos, the Underwater Archaeological Research Centre and the Church of “The Metamorphosis”, a Cross-in-square domed church dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ.

In front of Pylos and in the entire opening of the Bay of Navarino, the islet Sfaktiria extends and acts as a natural breakwater making the port of Pylos one of the safest ports in the Mediterranean.
Voidokilia Bay has been recognized officially as a landscape of exceptional natural beauty by the Greek government, and is one of the most captivating spots in Greece. No other geological formation like it exists elsewhere. The area is considered of archaeological interest, so it has remained intact by civilization. Voidokilia Beach is possibly the most renowned beach in Messenia and one of the most exquisite beaches in whole Greece! The beach took its name from the word “Voufras”, which means “where the oxen live”. Voidokilia is also referred as Vouvota (Oxen’s Belly) in an ancient inscription. Another obvious reason for the name of the beach is the great curvature of the bay which resembles the belly of an ox.
The Golden Beach, also known as Divari. The beach is 4 km long, with fine sand and turquoise waters and a beach bar at one end. Divari or Chrisi Akti is one of the most well-known beaches of Pylia. It is an extremely long beach and it is included in the designated special protection areas of Natura 2000. Divari lies opposite the town of Pylos. Near the area where the beach spreads, the visitor will find the beautiful lagoon of Gialova where an interesting variety of flora and fauna exists. The beach is located after the built-up area of Gialova.
Foinikounta Beach took its name by the homonymous picturesque village of Foinikounta which is now a renowned tourist destination of the Peloponnese. The sandy beach is spreading along the gulf. It is ideal for summer holidaymakers who enjoy quick dips into crystal-clear waters. It is convenient for families with small children and for anyone who chooses to have everything in a close distance! Right above the beach and along the coast you will find plenty of cafés and fish taverns, along with other shops for your daily needs.
Polylimnio: At a distance of 2okm from Pylos, on the way to Kalamata , lies Polylimnio, a beautiful network of waterfalls and lakes. The total distance from the car parking area to the last waterfall is aprox. 3 km
Kalamari: A beautiful waterfall just 7 km north of Pylos (by Schinolaka vijllage).
One of the most important wetlands in Europe, the Gialova Lagoon, is a key stopping point for birds migrating to and from Africa; more than 250 bird species have been recorded in the area. It is also the only European habitat of the African chameleon.
Visiting Pylos, you should not miss enjoying a coffee a refreshment drink breakfast etc under the plane trees on the central square (Trion Navarchon Square) with a view of the port.
A whole world waits beneath the waves in the Bay of Navarino and surrounding areas, and the only way to explore it is by scuba diving. Shipwrecks from the Roman and Byzantine eras, as well as from the Navarino Battle and recent years, will be revealed, like the tanker Irene’s Serenade, sunk in 1980. There are many diving schools in the area, such as the Ionian Dive Center in Marathopoli.
Just 4 km from Pylos, a 18-Hole Golf Course at a gorgeous place.
